When reading fiction, there are three big things that I want you to look out for. This will help guide your reading so make sure that you understand it. It will also help you focus your attention in a way that should make the questions easier to answer. If you cannot easily answer these, you need to reread.
The author's message- what deeper lesson do they want you to learn from the story? Remember, this is a sentence, not just one word.
Themes for ASOT: Follow the rules, your actions have consequences, and a little thing can have a big impact.
How is the story written and how does that affect your understanding of it? 1st, 2nd, 3rd limited or 3rd omniscient? If it's only from one person's PoV, then it's more likely to be biased, or one sided.
ASOT is 3rd limited. This creates suspense and helps us get a sense of wonder because Eckles has never seen this before.
This is how the author writes. Do they use lots of fig lang and imagery? Are their sentences really long and complicated or short and confusing? What do you think is the reason they write the way they do?
ASOT has lots of imagery and figurative language to describe the things that we've never seen before like the time machine and the dinosaur. He also uses complex, varied sentences, and lots of complex words. These are all very indicative of science fiction.
