Swindon Library
As well as having access to the full range of resources, services and facilities available from the Brookes Library at the Headington Campus (Gipsy Lane, Oxford) and online, students and staff based at Swindon also have a dedicated Library at Swindon.
What's in Swindon Library?
Swindon Library contains the core text books for all the Nursing courses taught at the Swindon Campus. You will also find print copies of journals such as Nursing Times. Many books and journals are also available electronically via the computers on the Swindon site or from anywhere you have internet access.
Location and opening times
Swindon Library is located on the ground floor of the Joel Joffe building in Swindon. It is open whenever the building is open. If you have any problems accessing the library please contact main reception.
How do I use Swindon Library?
Swindon Library operates on a self-service basis. It is essential that you issue books to yourself correctly using the self service machine. An email receipt will be issued to your Brookes email. Failure to return your books on time will result in you being fined.
· Finding the books you want All the books in Swindon Library are on the Library Catalogue, with the location shown as "Swindon". You can use the catalogue in the Library, or via the Internet.
· Issuing books You can borrow up to 25 books from Swindon Library at one time, including books from other campus libraries in Oxford.
Before removing any book from the Library, please issue it to yourself on the self-issue machine using your library card (your OBU student or staff card) - just follow the on-screen instructions.
Books are one week loans or reference only (red label on the spine). Reference copies of key books cannot be loaned.
When you have issued your books, press the button on the screen to email a receipt. This confirms that they have been issued to you, shows you when they are due back and logs you out of the machine.
· Renewing books If you have not finished with a book by the due date, the system will automatically renew your books up to 25 times. After the twenty fifth renewal, you will then need to return your book to the library.
· Returning books Please return books using the self-issue machine on or before the due date. Follow the instructions on the machine. You won't need your Library card. Place the books in the drop box next to the machine. Books from any campus can be returned to Swindon.
· Reserving books Books from any campus can be reserved online. It's important you return your books on time if they have been reserved or you will be fined. You can reserve a book on the Library catalogue by clicking on " Place Hold." You will receive an email to your Brookes email account once your reservation is ready for collection.
· Other healthcare libraries While you are studying at Brookes and while you are on placement, you are entitled to use other healthcare libraries. As Swindon students, this includes having full access to the Library at the Great Western Hospital. To find your nearest NHS library, go to Health Library and Information Services Directory. While on placement in the South West, the SWIMS network of health libraries in the South West of England and the South West Regional Library Services give information on library services which may be available to you. Please contact your placement library in advance to check on what access arrangements are available.
· Other academic libraries Information on accessing other academic libraries is available on our Access to other libraries web page. The SCONUL Access scheme provides staff and research students, part time and distance learning students, and full time undergraduate students with borrowing rights to other academic libraries. If you are travelling in to Swindon for your course, there may be another university library closer to home you could use as a place to study. The application process is all online so you can submit a request from home.
