Cell Phones & Other Devices
AP US History is a rigorous, college-level class and it is expected that you will do your part to contribute to an academic environment in the classroom in order to provide yourself and your peers with the greatest possible chance to be successful in the class and earn credit at the end of the semester. One of the best ways to do this is to refrain from being distracted by your cell phone, chromebook, or other personal devices during class time. While we are engaged in any non-independent learning (whole-class, group, partner, etc.), the expectation is that your phone is put away. You should only be on your chromebook if it is a required resource for the current activity.
While working independently, you may use your phone to listen to music with earbuds or headphones. Otherwise, please ensure that your phone is put away. (If you're unsure about what qualifies as independent work time, ask Ms. Justice :-)
The BHS Student Handbook states: "BHS Staff has the right to allow or disallow the use of personal mobile devices during instructional time as appropriate. BHS staff have the right to determine whether students' personal mobile devices are stored out of sight or placed on a student’s desk in plain sight. Violation of any of the conditions of use explained in the Electronic Resources policy or in these procedures could be cause for disciplinary action."
Class Attendance & Missed Assignments
Attendance will be taken daily. Attending class is crucial to your success in this AP class. Many assignments will be posted in the Google Classroom, but discussions and many in-class activities cannot be replicated if you miss our daily class meetings. Also, if you are physically present but choose to be disengaged &/or distracted by your phone or chromebook you will miss out on discussions and in-class activities cannot be replicated. Being both physically and mentally present is important for success in this class :)
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you need to make up after an absence! After checking Google Classroom and the "What Did I Miss?" binder in the back of the room, if you have additional questions please check with a classmate or email Ms. Justice for help.
Missed Quizzes: You can miss up to 3 quizzes first semester and up to 2 quizzes second semester due to absence without penalty. Due to the rigorous pacing of the course, any additional missed quizzes must be made up within 2 school days. Make-up times must be arranged in advance with Ms. Justice. Due to the amount of material that must be covered during class, quizzes must be made up outside of class time.
Missed Tests & Essays: It is your responsibility to reschedule any unit test or summative essay missed because of an absence. Due to the rigorous pacing of the course, unit tests must be made up within 3 school days. Make-up times must be arranged in advance with Ms. Justice. Due to the amount of material that must be covered during class, tests and essays must be made up outside of class time.
Test Corrections & Retakes: Test scores can be improved with test corrections (due 1 week after receiving the corrected exam). Test re-takes are available only after completing corrections (following the assigned format) and having a conference with Ms. Justice to discuss how to improve the test score.
Late Work Policy
In order to avoid falling behind and becoming too stressed or overwhelmed, it is important to turn in all assignments by the due date. In the event that you miss a due date, it is crucial to touch base with the teacher as soon as possible. Teachers will accept late work for 10 school days past the last day of the unit during which the work was assigned. The 10 days will start on the day after the unit ends. Weekends, holidays, and days when school is not in session will not count as part of the 10 days. There will be a Skills for Success deduction for all late work. All late assignments must be submitted with a Late Work Ticket.
If requested by the student, the teacher may choose to extend the late work deadline for an individual assignment. If the teacher determines that more time for work completion is warranted, then the student and teacher will establish a written late work agreement - which will also be shared with the student's parent / guardian.
Due to the rigor and pacing of this course, late work is strongly discouraged!
Academic Dishonesty
If a student copies, cheats, or plagiarizes –or assists another student in copying, cheating, or plagiarizing- the plagiarized assignment/test/quiz will not receive a score. The student involved in the academic dishonesty will be subject to the disciplinary consequences detailed in the BHS Student Handbook and will be provided with an alternate opportunity to demonstrate understanding on the assignment. The alternate assignment must be completed within the time frame specified by the teacher.
