Overview
The purpose of Instructional Coaching at Breakthrough is to support our Teaching Fellows through their 9-week Fellowship. Instructional Coaches are tasked with developing and refining their coaching skills, facilitating and supporting Teaching Fellow and student growth, and ensuring alignment with our Human First values:
Knowledge and Love of Self
Solidarity
Self-Determination
Instructional Coaches are tasked with setting well-defined goals for teaching and learning, and then employing research-based coaching cycles to establish clear processes for Teaching Fellows to meet those goals. Instructional Coaches create a shared definition of effective practice and build a culture of collaboration and accountability. Effective Instructional Coaches are critical to advancing Breakthrough’s mission to create a movement of college-ready middle and high school students, aspiring educators, and education advocates to become the next generation of leaders in their communities.
This toolkit is designed to provide role context and resources for new and veteran Instructional Coaches. This toolkit and its resources should be used in combination with site-specific training. Upon reviewing this toolkit Instructional Coaches should have a general understanding of their role in relation to Teaching Fellows and starter resources to adapt to support their Teaching Fellow's growth. Site Directors may also use this toolkit to build out Instructional Coach Training. NOTE: There are several links throughout this toolkit, there is an inclusive list of resources here
If you would like to adapt the Instructional Coach Toolkit to include site-specific information, please click here for the Google Doc version.
