In Branchburg, we utilize a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) model to meet students where they are at and support them academically, behaviorally, and emotionally.
Tier 1 - Strategies and supports for all students
Tier 2 - Small group interventions for students needing more support
Tier 3 - Individualized and targeted interventions based on student needs
Strategies: Differentiation for student needs based on content, process, product, and learning environment. For example: graphic organizers, scaffolded reading, tiering assignments, anchor charts, curriculum compacting, centers, and questioning.
Personnel Involved: All teachers in the building
At BCMS, a resource class period is built into every student's schedule. This is a flexible time during the day in which students can do homework, study for assessments, finish a test, work on group projects, seek out support from teachers, and move forward in their learning through enrichment opportunities. This is also a time that teachers can provide reinforcement if they notice that a student did not fully understand a concept or struggled on an assignment.
If a student is identified as needing additional Tier 2 supports, our instructional supports teachers will arrange times to support the student in their classes. This may look like the instructional support teacher pushing in to the general education language arts or math classroom where they will provide additional strategies or small group instruction to students. It may also look like students having scheduled resource group lessons with the instructional support teacher.
Students who are receiving Tier 3 academic support have a targeted plan in place either through I&RS, 504 or IEP services. These individualized plans are based on specific identified needs and provide supports catered to those areas.
All students benefit from school-wide assemblies, resource lessons from guidance counselors, and counseling services provided in the district.
Counselors are available to provide academic support, emotional supports, conflict resolution or social guidance.
Counselors, Mental Health and Well-Being Social Workers, as well as members of the Child Study provide group sessions for a variety of student needs. This may take the form of a Newcomer student group to help new students to the district acclimate and meet other students. It may be a social skills group for students to meet other students and practice skills when they struggle to make friends. Other groups may focus on topics like study skills, emotional regulation, self-regulation, or self-esteem.
There are a wide variety of Tier 3 supports provided by the guidance counselors and Mental Health and Well-Being Social worker at BCMS depending on student needs. Services may include screening and providing referral services for suicidal ideation or self-harm, chronic absenteeism support plan development and implementation, supporting students with school avoidance, counseling, problem-solving and conflict resolution or preventing/reducing problematic thinking.
