Research suggests that a sense of belonging for students is essential to their success in many ways. It allows them to feel more comfortable within the classroom and therefore more willing to participate in lessons. This participation allows for greater engagement in the lesson and enables teachers to have a better pulse on a student's understanding of content, enabling them to provide greater support to students. During times of transition, a sense of belonging is even more critical. Middle School students are quick to attribute struggles or challenges as a reflection on their own capabilities rather than seeing that these elements are often normal challenges for their age and grade. When students don't feel a sense of belonging in school, each struggle or obstacle can be viewed as a personal deficit and decrease a student's engagement in school. However, when the students feels a part of the school and sees that some of the transition challenges are a normal part of the experience, they are more like to attribute a stumble to part of the transition process than a blow to their self-esteem.
In elementary school, it is easier to build a sense of belonging in school. Each student is part of a small, self-contained classroom community throughout the day. They have the same teacher and same twenty-some students with them to create a shared experience.
At the middle school, students switch classes each period, mixing the composition of students in the class with each passing period. While they have the common experience of shared teachers, it is more difficult to connect with your classroom peers as students do at the elementary level. At the same time, developmentally, peer and social groups become even more critical as students build their identities. This is where involvement in clubs and extracurricular activities become essential for students. They provide opportunities for students to engage in a community of students around a common purpose, as well as try new things.
