HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE TECH AWARD

Course Overview / Introduction
This course gives you the opportunity to develop health and social care sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment, including key skills, effective ways of working and important attitudes for working in this sector.
What will you study?
Component 1 - Human Lifespan Development (30%) - internally assessed and externally moderated as a non-examinable internal assignment (NEA). During component 1, you will:
Explore how individuals develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually over time
Investigate how various factors, events and choices impact individuals’ growth and development
Discover how people adapt to life events and cope with making changes
Component 2 - Health and Social Care Services and Values (30%) - internally assessed and externally moderated as a non-examinable internal assignment (NEA). During component 2, you will:
Learn which health and social care services are available
Learn about specific health conditions
Identify why people might need to use these services
Explore the skills, attributes and values required when planning, delivering and supporting health and social care services
Explore what might stop people from accessing the services they need
Look at the care values the sector has to make sure people get the protection they need
Component 3 - Health and Wellbeing (40%) - external component, examination paper (60 marks)
Learn what ‘being healthy means to different people:
Explore the different factors that might influence health and wellbeing
Identify key physiological and lifestyle indicators, how to interpret them and how they support physical health
Assess an individual’s health using what has been learned
Create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for that person, which includes targets and recommendations of support services available
Reflect on the potential challenges the person may face when putting the plan into action including barriers and obstacles to achieving success.
How many exams are there?
The course is a 120 guided-learning hour qualification (equivalent in teaching time to one GCSE) and has one external assessment for 40% of the qualification. Edexcel sets and marks this assessment.
What will you gain from this course?
An understanding of the knowledge, skills and attributions that are needed in order to pursue a career in health and social care. It is a great course to support further study at Level 3 and provide you with an insight as to what working within the health and social care sector may involve.
The BTEC Tech Award suite is an introduction to vocational learning. The qualifications give learners the opportunity to build applied knowledge and skills that show an aptitude for further learning, both in the sector and more widely.
What does this lead to?
The qualification provides routes for continuing education and future employment into many diverse areas of the caring professions, including: Caring, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Social and Community Work.
