Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science. - Edwin Powell Hubble
Science is the study of the physical and natural world through observation and experimentation. Science includes learning about scientific laws that have been explored as well as all that has yet to be explored! Come to a TTA science class with curiosity, and a willingness to explore! Please note that individual assignments and grading rubrics may change each semester. Students will be asked to meet the requirements for each class, during the semester they register for the class.
Graduation Requirements: 6 semester credits of science; 4 of which must be lab sciences
Anchor Classes
Physical Science A & B
**Earth Science A & B
**Biology A & B
**Chemistry A & B
**Physics A & B
Astronomy A & B
Marine Biology A & B
Human Anatomy & Physiology A & B
Botany (One semester)
Zoology (One semester)
Classes marked with ** are also offered as Honors
Anchor classes are free, but students will be responsible to choose their own curriculum.
There are two types of courses within our Science Department.
Botany, Astronomy, & Zoology are all Research/project-based courses.
Research/Project Based courses are designed with real-world projects and tasks for students to complete. Students complete those weekly tasks while also completing the weekly assignment. There are content knowledge assignments, with research suggestions, as well as virtual labs to complete.
Students complete at least eight hours of natural journaling for Botany, eight hours of animal observations for Zoology, and 16 separate night sky observations for each semester of Astronomy.
Our other courses offer an approved alternative curriculum pathway and a teacher-directed pathway. The teacher-directed pathway will include all needed curriculum, resources, and lessons. The approved curriculum pathway will be similar to the approved curriculum pathways in Math. Students will have a progress check, a lab, a modeling/application assignment, and a Mastery assignment from that curriculum.
BYU Classes
Besides Anchor courses, students may choose to take a guided science course, overseen by an IHLA teacher and offered in the IHLA Schoology platform. These courses have a fee (for the 2025-2026) school year of $60. This is per course and is automatically deducted from Supplemental Learning Funds.
All BYU courses require students to take a proctored Final exam.
IDLA Classes
The IDLA website has a course catalog which can be searched by subject and grade level. IDLA offers Dual Credit classes as well as regular Science classes. IDLA courses usually take at least one hour per day on the computer in order for a student to be successful. IDLA classes generally have a $100 fee unless taken as an overload or a Dual Credit class.
