All Anchor English classes are designed to be completed with the resources provided in the course. For English 9 and 10, they will need access to a novel and non-fiction book for those specific units. Please see the syllabi for the most updated book requirements. Students are given weekly assignments to complete that should take several hours. They are encouraged to practice their language arts skills outside the required assignments through reading and writing activities of their choice. We also highly recommend students use Supplemental Learning Funds to order a Vocabulary or Grammar workbook for additional practice.
English 10 Portfolio Anchor Option
English 9 Portfolio Anchor Option
For families wanting more flexibility in their English 9 or English 10 courses we offer a Portfolio Anchor course which requires more planning and effort on the families, but allows students to personalize the course to fit their chosen resources to a higher degree than the regular Anchor courses. Please reach out to IHLAhighschool@malad.us if you are interested.
BYU English classes
Besides Anchor courses, students may choose to take a guided English course, overseen by an IHLA teacher and offered in the IHLA Schoology platform. There are limited BYU English courses offered, please see the course Catalog for more information. These courses have a fee (for the 2025-2026) school year of $60. This is per course and is automatically deducted from Supplemental Learning Funds.
All BYU courses require students to take a proctored Final exam.
