Humanities courses are performance-based courses aligned with Standards. Each course requires students to spend at least 60 hours completing assignments and practicing their craft or language.
In Foreign Language Courses, audio or video recordings are required to meet the Speaking Standards. Students should be spending 60 hours over the course of the semester completing the Anchor assignments, along with practicing their language skills. Students must submit proof of practice time spent in speaking, listening, reading & writing.
Music requires students to choose an instrument unless they are doing voice lessons. They submit a monthly theory assignment, a standards-aligned performance task, along with audio or video files showcasing their improvement in performance.
Visual Arts allows flexibility for students to choose the medium they would like to work with. They also have standards-aligned assignments to complete, along with videos or pictures of their artwork. At least one picture each semester should have the student, along with their artwork.
ASL requires videos of students, demonstrating their proficiency using ASL as part of their assignments.
Theatre requires students to participate in a community based theatre performance.
BYU Humanities
Besides Anchor courses, students may choose to take a guided humanities course, overseen by an IHLA teacher and offered in the IHLA Schoology platform. These courses have a fee (for the 2025-2026) school year of $60. This is per course and is automatically deducted from Supplemental Learning Funds.
All BYU courses require students to take a proctored Final exam.
IDLA Humanities
The IDLA website has a course catalog which can be searched by subject and grade level. IDLA offers Dual Credit classes as well as regular Humanities classes. IDLA courses usually take at least one hour per day on the computer in order for a student to be successful. IDLA classes generally have a $100 fee unless taken as an overload or a Dual Credit class.
