WELCOME TO THE WEBSITE OF THE BATAAN PENINSULA STATE UNIVERSITY SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE!
As a recognized leader in agricultural education, Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) is devoted to fulfilling the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger. Through strategic initiatives, BPSU aims to reduce hunger, promote sustainable agriculture, and empower local communities in Bataan and beyond. With an emphasis on instruction, research, extension, and resource production, the university is emerging as a provincial and national center for agricultural innovation and support.
Empowering Agriculture through Education and Research
BPSU integrates food security and sustainable agriculture into its academic programs, preparing a new generation of professionals to tackle hunger and agricultural challenges. Through outcomes-based education, courses on agriculture, food sufficiency, and sustainability are embedded into both undergraduate and graduate programs, including the Master of Science in Agriculture, and degrees in Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Technology, and Hospitality Management.
BPSU’s research initiatives advance knowledge and innovation in food security, providing insights and technologies to support local farmers and food producers. By aligning research with community extension projects, BPSU facilitates a direct transfer of skills and technologies, helping local farmers adopt sustainable practices and enhance their productivity. This interconnected approach ensures that research outputs are immediately beneficial to the community, driving both educational and practical outcomes.
Palay-Isdaan: Integrating Rice and Fish Farming
The flagship project “Palay-Isdaan” exemplifies BPSU’s dedication to sustainable and integrated farming practices. Funded with ₱3 million by the Commission on Higher Education - National Agriculture and Fishery System (CHED-NAFES), Palay-Isdaan is a community-based farm project that combines rice and fish farming, creating a symbiotic environment beneficial for both crops and livestock. This model farm serves as a training and demonstration site for local farmers and fish growers, encouraging the adoption of organic and sustainable methods.
The Palay-Isdaan project, often described as a “tech-to-table” initiative, aims to boost the economic resilience of farmers and fisherfolks by teaching them about organic farming techniques and sustainable resource management. By participating in the Palay-Isdaan training-seminars, local farmers are introduced to innovative technologies that can help improve their businesses and increase profitability. Held on June 19, 2023, the training in Sto. Domingo, Orion, Bataan, underscored BPSU’s mission to support not only SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) but also SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
E-CEST Extension Program: Building Resilient Communities
BPSU’s collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the E-CEST Extension Project is another impactful initiative aimed at creating progressive, empowered, and resilient communities. The E-CEST program introduces science and technology interventions designed to improve livelihoods, health, nutrition, education, environmental protection, and disaster risk reduction and management.
By partnering with the DOST, BPSU helps disseminate vital knowledge and skills for sustainable development in rural communities. These interventions support local resilience by equipping residents with sustainable agricultural techniques and health education and empowering them to maintain food security and community safety. This program highlights BPSU’s role in creating resilient communities that can withstand challenges and contribute to a hunger-free future.
Community Support Initiatives: Food Pantries and Nutrition Programs
To further combat hunger, especially during times of crisis, BPSU has established community pantries that provide food and essential supplies to students and community members. This initiative, particularly active during the COVID-19 pandemic, offered free food and drinks during special events, reinforcing BPSU’s commitment to food accessibility and nutrition for all.
These pantries were more than just temporary relief measures; they reflected BPSU’s enduring dedication to community well-being. By providing a dependable source of food during uncertain times, BPSU not only helped alleviate immediate hunger but also instilled a culture of sharing and support within the campus community. This initiative supports SDG 2 by ensuring no student or community member goes hungry, even in times of hardship.
Income Generation through Sustainable Food Stalls
To foster economic sustainability, BPSU has implemented income-generating projects that also contribute to food security. The university has established a food court with stalls operated by food caterers, creating a reliable revenue stream that benefits both the university and the local economy. These stalls provide nutritious and affordable food options to students and staff, supporting local businesses while promoting food accessibility.
These food stalls are more than economic initiatives—they symbolize BPSU’s vision for a sustainable, hunger-free campus. The income from these projects is reinvested into university programs, supporting scholarships, community outreach, and further SDG initiatives. This approach showcases how sustainable income-generating activities can contribute to SDG 2 by ensuring financial resources for ongoing food security projects.
A Future of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security
Through its holistic approach to education, community extension, and sustainable projects, BPSU is setting a new standard in agricultural education and community empowerment. By integrating sustainability into its curriculum, launching innovative projects like Palay-Isdaan, and partnering with national agencies such as DOST, BPSU is making significant strides towards achieving SDG 2. This commitment demonstrates the university’s role not only as an educational institution but also as a catalyst for sustainable development and community resilience.
As BPSU continues to expand its SDG initiatives, its impact on food security, sustainable agriculture, and zero hunger will only grow stronger. The institution’s comprehensive programs stand as a testament to the power of education, community partnership, and innovation in building a hunger-free and sustainable future. BPSU’s work under SDG 2 serves as an inspiring model for universities across the nation, proving that a collaborative and integrated approach is key to tackling the world’s most pressing challenges.
