Week 5 Learning Materials

Welcome to Week 5 Learning! You will notice that this week we have relabeled this content area from "Humanities" to Social Studies/History and created a separate book club to support your ELA learning experience. While we feel that a truly culturally proficient curriculum is interdisciplinary since our lives do not exist in content vacuums, we understand that it was elevated that consumers of BPS curriculum would prefer two distinct subject areas. With that said, all previously posted units under "Humanities" and those going forward under "Social Studies/ History" are aligned with History Common Core Standards and the BPS History pacing guide by year. Since the medium for exploration of these historical topics is largely through text with significant writing tasks, it borrows a great deal from the ELA content area. Creating a student-driven virtual experience does eliminate opportunities for discussion and debate, but we hope you are able to carry these conversations outside of the units and engage in these topics with your family, friends and classmates. As with weeks 3 and 4, each grade level contains a week-long investigation of an essential question. This investigation is broken up into activities that range from 20-45 minutes each to complete (suggestions for time management are introduced at the start of each unit along with a brief explanation of the topic). Daily activities may include reflections, close readings, image analyses, graphic organizers and media to support your learning as you engage with and explore the central question. For these inquiries, you will need access to your BPS Clever account to access BPS learning apps. Make sure you have your BPS email and password handy. Have fun learning!
