Dear Second Grade Families and Caregivers,

We know that missing school is not easy for children - or for you. However, there are some ways you can use this unexpected time at home as an opportunity for your students to continue to learn, think, and grow.

As much as possible, setting a schedule for your student at home can help to maintain a routine. If you are able, we recommend that students spend 30 minutes on reading, 30 minutes on writing, and 30 minutes on math each day. There are many examples of schedules for families floating around the internet, but this is one possibility:

It is important to keep in mind that this situation is completely unprecedented and so we all need to be doing whatever make the most sense for our own families. Because of this, please know that anything we send home is meant to be helpful, not create extra anxiety. Please use only what works for you.

Still feeling a bit overwhelmed? Here is a bit of advice from one of our very own Grade 2 parents who homeschooled her children up until this year:

First I would emphasize to families that this is a stressful time for everyone, including their children. The children are being exposed to and absorbing all of the negative energy surrounding this coronavirus pandemic. The children have gotten thrown out of their everyday school and social routine. This is a lot to process for children, especially young children. I would keep things light and simple, not packing on too much academics at first. I would encourage families to take some time to transition into the academics by playing with them, doing art activities, board games, cooking, watching a great movie or allowing them to play some video games such as Minecraft or Roblox. I strongly suggest getting some fresh air outside every day by going for a neighborhood walk, a nature walk or bike riding. I would definitely recommend keeping children on a consistent schedule so that their days don’t become too erratic.

Finally, we are attaching some resources you can access using a smart phone, tablet or computer. We hope that you and your families are able to stay safe and healthy during this stressful time and, as always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Love,

Mrs. Hanno & Ms. Lizbeth
