Learning about the DESIGN PROCESS can be interesting, but being able to understand and apply it to our everyday lives can be a valuable skill. We use the DESIGN PROCESS every day without really thinking about it. Probably the first major design problem we face is what to wear when we leave home every morning.
Problem solving design activities develop our ability to reason and to make value judgements. They provide opportunity to critically evaluate both our own design ideas and those of others.
For this project you will be required to follow the DESIGN PROCESS steps and keep a record of your work and findings either in your annotated sketches or in paper throughout the development of your ideas.
KIWI AS is a kiwi-based company that is trying to make its mark in a difficult commercial climate. Many goods are imported from China and other countries, but have been mass-produced and only designed for a single or limited use. This company is trying to create designs that will last a long time and be more ecologically friendly to the environment because of less waste. They know they need a special design that will appeal to a target client and that will last a long time. Their focus is in portable speakers and little home appliances.
BRIEF:
Small portable speakers are a huge seller throughout the world. There is a big focus now on natural looking designs and NZ made is also a big seller. You are to design a portable speaker shape that will fit the unit given to you. The design will need to made from wood (either stained ply or bamboo) and aluminum. The design will be for young professionals and will be more for display within a home rather than carrying around in a bag.
