Hackathons are innovation marathons where students come together to learn, build, and share their creations. There's a catch...hackathons provide a time limit for completion and presentation of skills. The purpose of a hackathon is to provide a solution to a problem in the most efficient way and shortest frame of time by working with others. They are a vehicle for creativity and ingenuity. Hackathons are not just limited to students with a background in coding; they are much broader in practice. Hackathons can be integrated into curriculum, or can be done in small pieces over the course of a few months culminating in a hackathon event.
The Kidoyo Code Conquest Hackathon, in which Bellmore-Merrick partakes in at both the middle school and high school level with other teams from districts across Long Island, challenges students to write code in order to gain "territory" on the code conquest game board. Teams can steal another's territory if their code is written more efficiently than the previous team's code. This event is fun, fast-paced, and a true demonstration of creativity and coding skills in hatch, python, html, sprite editor, and even Java.
