Labor Day has been around for a long time. It was first celebrated on Tuesday, September 5th, 1882. President Cleveland signed a law on June 28th, 1894, to make the first Monday in September Labor Day. Since that day, it has always been celebrated on the first Monday in September.
Many people to this day still don’t know who had founded the holiday. Some people think that Peter McGuire founded the holiday, and some people think that Matthew Maguire founded it. Recent research shows that while Maguire was working as secretary of the Central Labor Union, he had proposed the idea of the holiday in 1882. On the other hand, records show that McGuire had suggested making a holiday to recognize and honor hard workers. The country’s first ever Labor Day parade was held on September 5, 1882 in New York City and both McGuire and Maguire had gone to it.
Labor Day was celebrated on Monday, September 2nd this year. To celebrate the day off, over 70% of the middle schoolers hung out with family and friends. Other activities that the middle schoolers did included going camping, taking a trip, and going to the lake. Mrs. Froelich, the 8th grade Career Ed teacher, took a trip and quoted, ‘’I took a trip to Las Vegas and went to the Pilot 21 concert.” Adelyn Percy also took a trip, she went to Sylvan Lake in South Dakota. Adelyn quoted, “Sylvan Lake was an experience of a lifetime, with beautiful views.” Even if you just stay home, you can still have a good Labor Day weekend enjoying the day off.
In conclusion, Labor Day has been around for a long time and is an important holiday. Even though to this day we still don’t know the real founder, it is a day to relax and to recognize all workers. We hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend!
