In United Sound, there are mentors, and mentees. Mentors are students from Horizon, and Century, who have volunteered to help the mentees play an instrument. Mentees are students in the Special Education Program, who want to learn an instrument. The instruments in this program that can be played by the mentees are violin, viola, and the cello. United Sound isn’t limited to only these instruments, but this is what is offered here.

Mentees don’t learn super complicated notes or songs. They learn easy notes like a quarter note, 8th note, and half note. But they learn it through easy ways, like a cake, a donut, and a soup. The mentors help the mentees bow, hold, and read the notes. The mentors also help to make it sound good. That’s a basic run through of what United Sound is.

United Sound works by the mentors clapping to help keep the beat, and to help the mentees understand what they are playing. At a concert there would be a background orchestra playing a song, and the mentees would play their cakes, donuts, and soups to go with the song. This is how United Sound works.

United Sound meetings happen here in Horizon’s orchestra room, on Tuesdays from 3:45 - 4:30. Their concerts are spread throughout the year, but they are sometimes a whole concert with only United Sound, and other times, they will have a song or two that they play in an HMS concert.

United Sound happens here for a few reasons. It gives the mentees a chance to play an instrument, which they might normally be given the chance to. It also helps form healthy relationships between mentors, and mentees.

In an interview, Maddison DuToit, United Sound Co-President, she was asked, "What is your favorite part about United Sound?" She responded by saying, “My favorite part of United Sound are the relationships that form between mentees and mentors.”

This same exact question was asked to Cheyanne Simon, another mentor in the United Sound Program. She said, “Hanging with our group,”.

Seeing what these people have said, it’s easy to see that United Sound really does build “relationships that resonate”, which is one of the reasons there is United Sound.
