Meet the Director

Caty Wantland, Dance Director

My name is Caty Wantland, and I've been the Dance Director at Gladys Porter ECHS since 2009. I received a BA in Dance on the Performance Track from UTRGV (formerly UTPA) in 2008, with an emphasis in Flamenco and Modern Dance. Here at Porter I teach Dance I-IV, Ballroom Dance, and direct and choreograph the legendary Porter Belles and Beaus Dance Team. I also teach an after school Dance Theatre program with Texas 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

As a freelance artist, I have choreographed a number of works for studios, competition solos, college auditions, music videos, and have served as an educational consultant for several high school dance programs. I have choreographed countless musicals for local theatre companies such as Camille Playhouse and Brownsville Repertory Theatre, where I currently serve as Resident Choreographer and ballet/jazz teacher for the Youth Conservatory Company. My work has been commissioned by arts activism collectives such as Activating Vacancies Arts Incubator and Las Imaginistas.

I feel strongly that my students benefit from learning from a working artist, as my experience in the field is current and ever-evolving. I am committed to supporting the Porter Belles and Beaus Dance Team by offering comprehensive technical training, innovate choreography, and opportunities for artistic expression. Our students graduate with the training and education necessary to pursue dance at the collegiate and/or professional level.
