A Resource Guide for Environmental Justice & Activism
The Equitable Sustainability Literacy Guide website is committed to educating you on environmental problems through a social justice lens. We hope to expose the widespread injustices experienced through climate change and within the environmental movement, while encouraging the public to take action and combat it!
Through the Binghamton University Libraries, lots of research was done to provide information on the significant impact of climate change and environmental hazards on various marginalized groups. Read up on these topics by clicking on the "Environmental Justice" tab. With access to vocabulary, books, articles, videos, podcasts, and learning tools, you can learn more about environmental injustice in various ways. Explore our “Get Involved” section to become more active in groups fighting for environmental justice, read through our “Debunking” section to learn about common misconceptions, or check out the “News” tab to keep up with the latest stories about environmental concerns!

About Us
Jacqueline Jergensen (she/her)
Lead Student Researcher
Jacqueline is from Long Island, New York. She is an undergraduate student at Binghamton University who will be graduating with a Bachelor's Degree of Environmental Science in the Spring of 2023. Jacqueline is also pursuing a Master's Degree in Sustainable Communities and hopes to continue educating others about environmental justice in the future. Through this project, she has learned a lot about environmental justice and is very happy to help bring awareness to these issues while making resources accessible to all people.
Haley Arnold (she/her)
Student Researcher
Haley is a PhD student of Evolutionary Genetics at Binghamton University. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at the University at Buffalo in 2015. Her current research is investigating the genetics behind the divergence of two species of wildflower native to California. She intends to graduate in Spring 2022 and pursue work in the field of conservation genetics.
Sage Block (she/her)
Student Researcher
Sage is a current Graduate student in the 4+1 Sustainable Communities MS program at Binghamton University. She graduated from Binghamton in 2021 with a BA in Environmental Policy and Philosophy, Politics, & Law (PPL). Her current graduate research is about the relationship between public art, community identity, and sustainability in Binghamton. After graduating in May 2022, she hopes to return home to NYC and pursue a career in building a more sustainable future for all.
Jennifer Embree (she/her)
Project Advisor
Jen is the Sustainability Hub Coordinator and Subject Librarian for Biology, Psychology, Comparative Literature, Translation Research, and Latin American and Caribbean Areas Studies at Binghamton University. She is also a co-founder of the Binghamton University Libraries’ Sustainability Hub and Seed Library. She earned her BAs in English and Psychology from the University of Connecticut and an MS in Library Science from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. Her current research, which is being conducted with her sustainability partner-in-crime, Neyda Gilman, includes: 1) exploring the history of seed libraries and 2) creating more practice-based, active, and equitable sustainability engagement opportunities in higher education. In her free time, she loves to garden, hike with her dog Banjo, and binge-watch British comedy shows.
Neyda Gilman (she/her)
Project Advisor
Neyda is the Assistant Head of Sustainability & STEM Engagement and the Librarian for the Decker College of Nursing & Health Sciences and the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences at Binghamton University in Binghamton, New York. She is also a co-founder of the Binghamton University Libraries’ Sustainability Hub and Seed Library. She has a BS in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Utah and worked as a medical technologist in a variety of laboratories before earning her MS in Library and Information Science from the University at Buffalo. When she isn’t working with Jen Embree on all-things-sustainability, she enjoys reading, video games, organizing her seed collection, and chasing her two cats around the garden.
