This page has local and international organizations that work to combat environmental injustices! Some focus on food security while others focus on Indigenous leadership. They all have many different ways for all to become fight for environmental injustice through donations, volunteer and employment opportunities, or even signing up for newsletters to stay informed! Local Organizations

Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments (VINES) is a community based organization that aims to establish environmental and food justice through sustainable community building. VINES runs workshops, leadership programs, and planting events while maintaining over 18 community gardens in Binghamton, Johnson City, Hillcrest, Dickinson, Endicott, Endwell and Vestal!

Soul Fire Farm works to achieve food sovereignty and racial justice. This organization has an Afro-Indigenous centered community farm located in Rensselaer County, NY. They run workshops for other BIPOC growers and youth, deliver crops to families facing food insecurity, and are involved in local policy. They utilize generational knowledge and provide resources for all.

The Susquehanna Group is a group of the Sierra Club that covers most of the Southern Tier of New York. They work in the community hosting events and meetings while educating the public about current and local environmental issues through newsletters.

The Network for a Sustainable Tomorrow, formally known as the Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition, is a community based organization centered in the Southern Tier of New York. They work towards social, environmental, and economic justice and equity through educational and career opportunities while also sharing resources and news. The Southern Door Community Land Trust is a grassroots organization lead by Black women based in Broome County, NY. They work to ensure housing justice for all people, considering social, economic, and environmental injustices and barriers. Attending their housing justice talks, become an ambassador to advocate for housing justice, or donate today!

UPROSE is an inclusive grassroots organization that promotes sustainability and resiliency through community engagement, education, and cultural expression. This organization in Brooklyn, NY works with other coalitions and alliances to help achieve climate justice, energy democracy, and business resiliency. They send out newsletters and encourage marginalized individuals to apply for jobs within their organization.

International Organizations

The Climate Justice Alliance is a coalition among more than 80 grassroots organizations across the United States. The alliance provides resources and a platform for individuals to organize and work towards a just transition to a more sustainable society and climate.

Equitable Food Oriented Development (EFOD) is a national organization works with communities to create equity across the intersection of food, culture, and health. EFOD partners with local organizations, policy makers, and nonprofits to provide the necessary resources that communities need to build independent, equitable, and sustainable food systems.

Climate Wise Women helps give women the platform they need to speak out and organize against environmental issues. They fund, train, and educate women to help combat the patriarchy and environmental issues together.

The International Indigenous Youth Council helps Indigenous youth to organize and advocate for their rights. They work to create a sustainable future for all through education, spirituality, and community engagement. This group was active against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

La Vía Campesina is an international organization that works to end food injustices through sustainability and food sovereignty. They especially empower Indigenous farmers, women, and youth. La Vía Campesina publishes a newsletter with updates about Food Justice. This group helped peasant farmers in Punjab, India.

The UN-REDD Programme, or the United Nations Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, works with Indigenous groups and women of lower classes to establish sustainable and profitable forest management techniques. Vu Thi Hien began this program in Vietnam and it has expanded to support many more communities across the globe.

The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) is an organization through the UN to help measure and track changes in arctic environment. They study the effects of pollution and climate change while advocating for the wildlife and people who face the consequences of it. This organization was started by Jannie Staffansson of the Sammi nation in Northern Europe.

Zero Hour is a youth led group that organizes protests locally, nationally, and internationally. They advocate for environmental legislation and justice while helping young citizens register to vote and pressuring officials to implement necessary climate policies.

Cultural Survival is an international organization that lends support to grassroots Indigenous movements around the world. They help to lift Indigenous voices, promote education, and fund Indigenous led projects.

Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance (NAFSA) is a national organization that works to restore Indigenous food systems while preserving the culture and identity of various Indigenous groups. They host programs, take donations, and publish newsletters.

Subscriptions

Intersectional Environmentalist (IE) is a resource hub created by environmentalists, many who are BIPOC and identify with the LGBTQ+ community. Infographics, news, and other resources are posted on their website, in their newsletter, and especially through their social media accounts.

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) is a nonprofit organization that is lead by environmentalists around the world. Joining the organization with your institution or nonprofit allows the public to get involved with sustainability education and events.
