The SSE (Short Service Employee) Program at BHI is a structured training and mentorship initiative designed to integrate new employees into the company’s safety culture and operations. It consists of a combination of on-the-job training (OJT), task completion, and safety audits, all guided by experienced mentors.
The program is administered through the Courses and Training App in the BHI App Library, where mentors track progress and ensure compliance with safety requirements. New employees are required to wear a green silicone band on their hard hats as an identifier until they complete the program, which typically lasts six months. Completion of tasks and training ensures the employee is ready to work independently while adhering to BHI's Goal Zero safety philosophy.
The SSE program is administered through a combination of structured training, task tracking, and mentor oversight. Mentors, selected for their experience and alignment with BHI’s values, play a critical role in guiding new employees through the program. They are responsible for ensuring that SSEs complete required tasks, attend training sessions, and participate in safety audits, all while providing continuous feedback and support.
Mentors are tasked with helping SSEs understand the company’s safety culture, values, and operational procedures, reinforcing the principles of Goal Zero. They track progress through the system outlined below, ensuring that each SSE meets the necessary milestones and is fully integrated into the BHI culture before graduation from the program.
SSEs have a six-month window to complete the program, though they can work with their mentors to finish the required tasks at their own pace. The remaining time serves as a probation or observation period where SSEs demonstrate their ability to work safely at BHI.
Unsafe behaviors or incidents may require tasks to be reassigned for re-completion, including an exam on the topic, and may extend the completion date beyond the six months. SSEs with significant industry experience or those in supervisory roles may bypass the observation period and graduate early only with approval from EHS Administration and Division Leadership.
