Library Policies and Information

Library F.A.Q.

Q: What resources does the BHS library have available for students?

A: The BHS library offers a variety of seating options for quiet reading or study, twelve desktop computers, a printer, a Promethean Board, a 3D printer, and a projector. The BHS Library also has puzzles, board games, card games, chess, coloring sheets and supplies, and of course, books. Our library collection includes a wide variety of both fiction and nonfiction books, including graphic novels and manga. The library also houses a computer lab and the Testing Center. Students will also go to the library for any tech issues they may experience.

Q: Can I eat in the library?

A: Generally, food is not allowed in the library. Juniors and Seniors are allowed to spend their lunch time in the library, but they may not bring their lunch to the library. Students who come here during lunch usually do so either after they've eaten or they are coming to the library because they are choosing not to eat lunch and would like a quieter space to spend their lunch time. One exception is that students who have class in the library during 2nd block may bring their 2nd chance breakfast to the library and eat there. Drinks are allowed as long as they stay away from the computers.

Q: What are the library hours?

A: Currently, the library is open from the time students enter the building at 7:50 until around 3:45 in the afternoon.

Q: How many books can I check out at a time?

A: Students can check out up to 10 books at a time.

Q: When are my books due?

A: At the time of checkout, Ms. Shaner or Ms. Mitola will stamp the inside cover of your book with the due date. For students, books are due 2 weeks after checkout. If you need the book for a little longer, you will need to stop into the library with the book in order for us to renew it for you.

Q: How do I check out, renew, and return my books?

A: To check out a book, you may select it from the shelf and bring it to the circulation desk near the main library entrance. At the desk, Ms. Shaner or Ms. Mitola will check the book out to you and stamp it with the due date. If your due date is approaching and you'd like to continue reading the book, you may stop into the library and ask Ms. Shaner or Ms. Mitola to renew the book for you. We will scan the book and stamp it with the new due date. To return your books when you are finished reading them, you may simply place them in the book drop at the very beginning of the circulation desk, right after you walk in the front doors of the library.

Q: How do I know if the book I'm looking for is in the library?

A: All students and staff members have their very own login to Destiny Discover, the program that we use to search our library catalog. You can find the link on our library home page. Your login should be the same as your ChromeBook login (username will be your student ID and password will be "bcs" followed by the last 6 digits of your state ID). If you need help with your Destiny Discover login, please see Ms. Mitola in the library or email her at mmitola@bettendorf.k12.ia.us.

Q: When can I use the library?

A: The library is available for anyone to use before and after school and during passing time. During class time, students may visit the library to print, check out books, or read quietly with special permission and a pass from their teacher. Ms. Mitola hosts quiet studies in the library during Pride time on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. Students MUST sign up in FlexiSched in order to attend these quiet studies, including seniors. On Thursdays, Ms. Mitola hosts Book Club in the library during Pride, and only book club members may attend. If you are interested in joining book club, reach out to Ms. Mitola at mmitola@bettendorf.k12.ia.us

Q: Why can't I enter the library through the back doors?

A: The back doors of the library are locked from the outside for a reason. All students must enter the library through the main doors for security reasons. It is imperative that Ms. Mitola and Ms. Shaner are able to monitor who is in the library at all times. It would be really difficult to do that if we allowed students to enter through the back doors. It is also strictly prohibited to open the back doors from inside the library to allow another student to enter. Doing so will result in disciplinary action, as there is signage clearly posted on the back doors stating the reasons why they are locked.

Q: I have a different question about the library. Who should I ask?

A: You can ask Ms. Mitola, the BHS Teacher-Librarian, or Ms. Shaner, our library paraeducator. Their contact information is on the Library Staff page. You can also stop into the library to see them in person!
