Ms. Mitola joined BHS as a Language Arts teacher in 2021 and transitioned to the teacher-librarian role a year later. Ms. Mitola is a dog-lover, book-lover, and music-lover. She has two Corgi mixes named Casey and Zippo. She recently became certified as a secondary handler for one of BHS's therapy dogs, Leia. Ms. Mitola lives with her husband, Kevin, and her 13-year-old sister, Bekah. Her recent delights include watching Demon Slayer, playing Animal Crossing New Horizons, and reading as many books as she can from the BHS library.

Ms. Shaner and her son, Winston
Ms. Shelley Shaner, Library Paraeducator
Ms. Shaner has worked for the Bettendorf Community School District for 22 years! She started 2003 and has worked with countless students through credit recovery and study hall. Ms. Shaner enjoys photography and art in all forms. She has a degree in Interior Design, and she is currently studying to become an art teacher. She has really enjoyed her new role in the library so far. Ms. Shaner adores her Cockapoo, Capper, who she's raised since he was 8 weeks old. Her son, Winston, is a senior at BHS. He plays football and basketball. Ms. Shaner loves being an ultra sports mom. You can find her at the next home game with pom poms and a Bulldog flag.

Leia, BHS Therapy Dog
Leia is a yellow lab owned by Mrs. Wiley (Science Teacher) and Mr. Wiley(Social Studies Teacher & Head Football Coach). She is trained as a professional therapy dog through CARES, Inc. She came to BHS in 2021 and has brought so much joy to students and staff since! Leia's handlers are Mrs. Wiley, Mr. Wiley, Ms. Mitola, Ms. Jemison, and Mrs. Cauwels. She spends most of the day in the library, working with students and staff as they study or read. She loves pets, interacting with students. Learn more about our district therapy dog program here.
