Please read all the information on this page to be prepared for the Ag Tech and Mechanics contest.
Each contestant should be prepared with the following:

Clip Board
Safety Glasses
Welding Gloves
Appropriate Clothing and footwear (see below)
Woodworking Tool & Fasteners Identification (50 points individual/200 points team)
Value per question will depend on the number of questions. Between 25 and 30 identification questions will be asked. Students will be allowed approximately 60 seconds to answer each question, 30 minutes total. Students will move from one station (question) to the next in a rotation process. Time does not allow students multiple visits to questions. Students will place all answers on a scan sheet and only the sheet will be graded. Each student will work independently, and all necessary tools and equipment will be provided. Questions could include identification of basic hand tools, power tools, building component identification (lumber, panels, siding), and fasteners.
Knowledge/Critical Thinking (50 points individual/200 points team)
Value per question will depend on the number of questions. Between 25 and 30 multiple choice questions will be asked. Students will be allowed approximately 60 seconds to answer each question, 30 minutes total. Students will move from one station (question) to the next in a rotation process. Time does not allow students multiple visits to questions. Students will place all answers on a scan sheet and only the sheet will be graded. Each student will need a calculator. Each student will work independently, and all necessary tools and equipment will be provided. Questions could include the reading of measurements with various measuring tools; small engine operation and/or maintenance; agricultural equipment replacement part selection and/or troubleshooting; welding, welding symbols, welding equipment, and welding operations; equipment parts identification and/or operation; types and applications of wood fabrication, structural and machine fasteners; a variety of agricultural related calculations, and the identification of proper tools and tool sizes.
Written examination (50 points individual/200 points team)
60 minutes will be provided for each student to complete an examination that consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. Each question is worth two points. Questions will come from AFNR Power, Structural, and Technical Systems that involve mathematical calculation, technical knowledge, and/or interpretation of tables, diagrams, and/or other reference materials. Each student needs a calculator to complete this examination. Calculators may not be shared between students and cell phone calculator apps cannot be used. Agricultural Mechanics and Technology Systems, 2nd Edition
Welding (70 points individual/280 points team)
Team members will be required to bring their own safety glasses and welding gloves. Teams will be required to wear welding appropriate clothing
which includes long pants, long sleeved shirts, and closed toed shoes. Individuals will be subject to automatic disqualification for inappropriate clothing/PPE. Leather footwear is highly recommended. Expect print & symbol reading with GMAW & SMAW-7018 processes. Safety Glasses are required. Please bring welding gloves
We ask that you drop your teams off at our school shop to complete the competition. Please have contestants there and ready to go with all of the items needed to compete when you arrive at the school shop. Please see the map below.
Team scores will be calculated using all 4 team members
Please plan on checking in at the Fairgrounds prior to taking your students to the contests at remote locations.
The Ag. Tech. & Mech. contest will take place at the Bear River High School Ag shops; 2 miles from the fairgrounds (1450 S Main St. Garland)
Since school will be in session, there is no bus parking available at this location and small vehicle parking is very limited.
Please drop off compeditors at the ag building by using the driveway on the south side of campus, turn right at the stop sign. Drop off at the sidewalk that leads to the front doors on the north side of the ag building (brown brick building). Busses can continue north between the bleachers and main building to exit.
It will also be important to be respectful of classes that are taking place in the ag building. Contestants will have access to the restrooms, but should remain in the shops for the duration of the contest otherwise.
