What:
Snapshot Voice or Photovoice is a method in which participants take pictures to represent their response, an experience, or a perspective.
How to do it:
Identify a topic that you would like perception data on and the target population who you want to obtain feedback from.
Develop parameters around how to obtain & submit photos, communicate what you plan to do with the photos and a plan for follow-up with participants.
Determine if participation will be anonymous or public and invite participants to capture photos representing their feedback to your question or focus area.
Collect and review the photos.
At a previously determined time, share or display photos.
Create reflection based questions for participants to respond to the images.
Determine how participants will reflect on these questions: Community circle, small groups, individually, over intervals of time, etc.
Once the reflection and discussion has occurred, the group should determine how to proceed with the results.
Students can create collages in response to a concept or prompt.
Students use images to represent their culture, ethnicity, heritage, family, etc.
Students collect snapshots to represent their favorite qualities of their school, district, or community.
Students are asked to provide images of their interests or hobbies for team building.
Students take images of physical environments of needed improvements.
Images can be taken to represent a completed project/activity.
Students can take pictures of math being used in everyday life.
Things to Consider:
Participant access to technology to capture images.
Review images and engage students in conversation if images will not be used. Provide feedback for student understanding.
Allow participants to create art instead of images.
Be clear about expectations, what images might be inappropriate, respecting those who may not want their picture taken, any basic needs around digital size of images or other constraints to allow students to be successful.
Provide photo release forms when necessary.
Take It to the Next Level:
Leveling Up Towards the Leadership End of the Spectrum of Student Voice-Oriented Activity
Engage students in identifying the topic, question, and/or prompt.
Consider how students can provide leadership from facilitating the activity, making meaning of the data collected, and advising how the data is used.
You can watch a short video of how the Photovoice strategy was used in a classroom in Alberta in a Native Community. Read more about project in the article here from the Alberta Regional Professional Development Consortia (ARPDC).
