Welcome! This week we are kicking off the course with a chronological introduction to how we as a nation, planet, and people arrived to the issue of waste. We will discuss how the emergence of plastic and convenience culture fundamentally changed the way we live and make an argument in favor of a more sustainable, zero-waste culture. This course is Environmental Justice centered, at the bottom of each lecture page there is a section explicitly focused on this topic.
Watch this video! While it is a good overview of many issues we will cover in our curriculum, be aware that this video spends more time highlighting problems; we will focus on their solutions.

Over the past year, I have been adding interesting environmentally-minded videos to this playlist to share with students. Some of them we will see in class, but many offer nuance to topics we only get to skim over during lecture. I encourage you to scroll through or keep it in mind the next time you go on a YouTube binge. - Sage
Consumerism is deeply rooted in the Western ideology that the Earth is meant to be conquered and subdued; the world's people of color are also frequently subject to this view. The practice of colonization is centered around the exploitation of people and natural resources. Today, people in the Global South live in poverty due to Western demand for more and cheaper goods. Most excess resources are taken from developing countries for Western use, making them unavailable to those who need them the most, and these vulnerable people are then exploited for cheap labor in the production of Western goods. As a result, these communities face poverty, pollution, and environmental degradation.
