How it works

Explore service and social impact opportunities for Cal student-athletes and teams.

Service opportunities are organized into 3 ‘strands’ that increase in their level of intensity (preparation, time commitment, creativity, and support from the Cameron Institute). All service opportunities are: 

Foundational opportunities are presented below, and students can make an appointment with the Cameron Institute team to explore interests on a deeper level. Reach out to cameroninstitute@berkeley.edu or schedule an appointment to discuss your interests!


Strand 1: Cal in the Community - Universal Volunteer Experiences in the East Bay

Exploration and exposure to short and long-term volunteer opportunities through two main initiatives that leverage our unique strengths as a Cal Athletics community. See monthly featured service opportunities here.

Go Bears, Go Play!

Be a "recess rockstar." 

Support inclusive, positive play and early college awareness at recess

Go Bears, Go Read!

Be a reading role model. 

Support early literacy through one-on-one reading support and read alouds.

Strand 2: The Team-Based Community Engagement Cycle

Connecting service and sport. Intentional community collaborations supported by the Cameron Institute where an entire Cal Athletics team comes together to learn, plan, and make a positive difference in our east bay community.

A competitive program for student-athletes who wish to dedicate their time and energy to make a positive and sustained difference

Education 144: Cal in the Community 

A field study course offering 1-3 credits
