Course Description:
INTRODUCTION to MEDICAL CAREERS This course is designed to expose students to the Health Care industry by surveying the wide spectrum of Health Care occupations and equipping them with the entry-level knowledge and skills that apply to a variety of health occupations. Students explore the anatomy and physiology of the human body and related careers. This course examines organ system structures and functions, diseases and disorders, as well as the language of healthcare (Medical Terminology). Students who successfully complete this course will acquire the necessary core knowledge and skills that will allow them to pursue an education and/or career in the Health Care industry. This course is the first of two courses as part of the Health Science and Medical Technology Pathway.

MEDICAL SCIENCE & TERMINOLOGY Prerequisite: Enrolled in Biology or higher and Math 1 or higher Medical Science and Terminology is a health science course that examines anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology while applying scientific knowledge and research to the study of the human body. Students will focus on the various body systems using scientific methodologies (inquiry, developing hypotheses, gathering factual information, evaluating data and drawing conclusions) to the practices employed by healthcare professionals. This course builds on basic principles and medical terminology and vocabulary needed to work in the healthcare field with emphasis on spelling, pronunciation, abbreviations and definition of medical terms. Comprehensive medical vocabulary will be related to the body systems and medical specialties. This course integrate college preparatory Medical Terminology and the Career Technical Education pathway of “Patient Care” within the Health Science and Medical Terminology sector. Students will explore concepts and the relationship between anatomical structures, apply directional terminology and compare to their own body. Students will explore therapeutic care concepts such as quality assurance, HIPAA confidentiality regulations, analyzing bio-statistics, infections control and ethical or moral dilemmas stemming from opposing forces within hospital administration.
