above and beyond

At teacher team meetings this month, the focus was differentiating for students with plans that have "a low floor and a high ceiling" so that students can grow successfully without upper limits on learning. Projects that have high expectations and scaffold down for understanding are a successful path of learning for all students. To build upon that form of differentiation, an additional topic of teaching students to go above and beyond by explicitly teaching what that might look like was explored.

Many of our PTP students are curious and driven for success. Going above and beyond gives students creative opportunities to lead and learn at their own level and pace. An example of an assignment that has a low floor and a high ceiling that also asks kids to go above and beyond is the first grade "Donut Shop" project. First grade PTP students have been laughing and learning as they try their best to "get the kids to the donut shop." Simple machines, acceleration, trial and error, persistence, feedback, reflection and a willingness to change our thinking are key elements of this science themed activity. Once the desired result of getting the kids to the donut shop was met, the next expectation of "form and function" asked students to think about not just the engineering of the ramp they built, but also the beauty of the structure. As expected, these students never gave up reaching for these goals!

Developing a student who reaches their potential involves dynamic and organic methods. Teaching students to take on challenges, work hard, and confront deficiencies and correct them are lessons to build on for a lifetime. It's a pleasure watching, responding, and teaching in this way with these precious little humans.

noetic math challenge results

The Noetic Learning Math Contest (NLMC) is a semiannual problem-solving contest for elementary and middle school students. Noetic Math believes that problem-solving helps students to become better mathematicians, better thinkers, and more equipped for advanced STEM learning and research. The goal of the contest is to develop students' problem-solving skills, to encourage their interest in math, and to inspire them to excel in math. During the contest, students are given 45 minutes to solve 20 problems. The contest is for students in grades 2-8.

After practicing and preparing, the Noetic Math Challenge test was taken and the scores are in!

PTSA Annual Reflections Arts Contest

Thank you to Beechwood's PTSA for participating in the National Annual Reflections Arts Contest. This allows our students to showcase their talents at the school, state, and national levels! This year's theme was "I Can Change the World By..."

Students who participate get an opportunity to explore the arts and culture, develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills and recognize themselves as artists and become more interested in the ideas and works of others. Participating in the Reflections Program gives students a chance to experiment in six art categories: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts (including such forms as drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage), dance choreography, and film production.

state winners

Anna Stanley, second grade, and Ellie Groene, fourth grade, are all smiles with their PTSA ribbons and certificates! Written composition winners!

Congratulations Ellie and Anna!

state and national winners

Greg Tang’s Summer Break Math Challenge!

During the break, students can go to gregtangmath.com to complete the activities on the attached game board. The additional game boards are on the site listed below.

This is an enrichment activity. Students who can’t participate will not be penalized in any way. Students who complete the challenge can earn a certificate and a chance to win a personalized signed copy of one of Greg Tang’s books.

It is fine for students to get help from you or someone else if they need it. They can also move to a harder or easier level of the game to make things more or less challenging.

After your child completes a game board, be sure to enter them for a chance to win a prize.

We have plans to add interactive game boards that will guide your children through games that will help them the most. Be on the lookout for the interactive game boards coming this summer!
