Our district recently adopted Bridges in Mathematics. It is a comprehensive PK–5 curriculum that equips teachers to fully address state standards in a rigorous, engaging, and accessible manner. Students gain a deep understanding of concepts, proficiency with key skills, and the ability to solve complex problems. The curriculum is composed of three distinct but integrated components: Problems & Investigations (the whole group lessons), Work Places (hands-on math centers), and Number Corner (calendar time).

GRADE 1:

Students focus intensively on the four critical areas specified by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in Grade One:

Addition and subtraction within 20
Whole number relationships and place value
Linear measurement in non-standard units
Reasoning with shapes and their attributes

Math Facts: The first grade common core standards expect students to show fluency with their addition & subtraction facts through ten. To help with this memorization students will use a program on their iPads called XtraMath to practice along with various weekly classroom activities. Please review and help your child practice his/her facts at home as well.

“I Can” Statements for the 1st Grade Math Standards

I can use addition & subtraction within 20 to solve word problems.
I can add 3 numbers & figure out problems with missing numbers.
I can make relationships between numbers and equations.
I can relate counting to addition (skip counting).
I can add and subtract within 20 and can fluently add & subtract to 10.
I can understand the meaning of an equal sign and can decide if equations are true or false.
I can count to 120 starting at any number.
I can understand what each numeral represents in a 2 digit number (place value).
I can understand the place value a digit and can look at numbers based on tens and ones.
I can compare two-digit numbers using symbols <, >, =.
I can add 2 digit numbers using visuals.
I can mentally find 10 more or 10 less than a number without having to count.
I can add and subtract multiples of ten in the range of 10-90.
I can compare three objects by length.
I can measure and understand how to use multiple items to measure.
I can tell time to the hour and half hour using both analog and digital clocks.
I can organize and interpret data (graphing).
I can name, create, and list attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes.
I can partition shapes into 1/2 and 1/4 using the words halves & fourths (fractions).
