Formative Assessment

Understanding where students are in their learning is crucial for educators to understand the effectiveness of their teaching and for students to be able to articulate how they know what they know. The use of formative assessment has 2 components. First, it tells the student where they are in their understanding. Questions that ask for short and quick responses are best, and allow students an opportunity to gauge their own understanding. Second, and perhaps more importantly, formative assessment gives the teacher valuable feedback during the course of a lesson or learning. EdPuzzle is a fantastic tool for formative assessment. Teachers can create their own formative assessment video, or choose from countless pre-created videos from the EdPuzzle database. Teachers can embed formative assessment questions throughout the video to check for student understanding. 

Flip a Lesson

The Edpuzzle flipped classroom consists of assigning your students video lessons to watch at home or in a blended learning station rotation model and using class time for more meaningful activities. Students learn the basic concepts of the lesson from these videos while watching them at their own pace. By structuring a flipped model in the classroom, the teacher now has more time in the classroom to work on other activities that will reinforce students' understanding of the topic. Edpuzzle makes the flipped classroom work. Some important things to note.

• Many teachers think that they have to flip all their lessons. That's simply not true. We recommend flipping one or two units your first year and working in a few more in the second.

• Students might be reluctant at the beginning - they have to pay attention to the video and respond to questions, and it's no longer an easy passive experience for them. However, in the long run, students will start to see a change in their understanding and grades. Don't give up – you will see results!
