Complaint Box Essay and New York Times Food Critic Review

Mr. Gillette, January and April 2023

Expresses and explains a clear and specific personal perspective on a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, and describes influences on that perspective.

This second semester I took Comedy, Satire and the Rhetoric of Laughter. Which made for a very interesting and fun class. As a part of the class we had to write in various humorous ways. The first way of writing was to mimic the New York Times Complaint Box. We had to choose whatever that thing was that just always bothers you for some reason or another.  With this I was to talk about a topic in a way that was a simple observation of an environment, object, trend, etc. to make a somewhat witty or humorous piece. For my complaint box essay I wrote about hallway walking etique at school. I talked about various “types of walkers” from slow walkers, to indecisive ones as well as the sore sight of PDAers, I turned my observations and icks into an essay.

The second humorous writing technique was to write a Satirical review inspired by a New York Times Food Critic. Our goal was to completely exaggerate our thoughts and feeling of something to capture the language of a review. So what better to choose than the schools Salisbury Steak. And so with full heart I gave my honest opinion on Salisbury Steak, which was a rather positive one.
