Lesson 1

INTENT: to understand Hindu beliefs about God. 

IMPLEMENTATION: We discussed how religion is a big part of some individuals lives. Children watched videos of how two children carry out their lives following Hinduism in Britain. We discussed the different types of gods and how they represent different aspects of life. They then looked at Mandir which and a Puja tray and we discussed what the elements on a Puja tray represented.

IMPACT: Children understand different beliefs of Hindus and rituals that they do. They also understand how objects represent varied aspects of life.

Lesson 4

INTENT: to understand how and why Hindus celebrate Diwali. 

IMPLEMENTATION: Children acted out the story of Rama and Sita. We discussed how Hindus celebrate Diwali and how it links to the story of Rama and Sita. We then looked at Rangoli patterns and how Hindus use them to welcome Lakshmi into their home. The children then created their own Rangoli patterns. 

IMPACT: Children know what Diwali is and why Hindus celebrate Diwali. They also understand what Hindus do during Diwali. 

Lesson 1:

INTENT: I can explain why rules are important and how the Golden Rule is important.

IMPLEMENTATION: Children were given a selcection of games to play but with no rules. Children were asked to think about how no rules affected their game and whether they made their own rules. Children were then shown three important rules from different religions and were asked to find the link. Children watched a video where members of the public 'paid forward' their acts of kindness that they had received themselves.

IMPACT: Children understand that rules are important as they help us to know what we need to do. Children also understand that the main message of the Golden Rule is to treat others how you wish to be treated. Children know what they can do to 'pay forward' an act of kindness.

Lesson 3:

INTENT: I can understand how people decide what is right and wrong without God's help.

IMPLEMENTATION: Children explored different scenarios and decided whether the way a person acted within them was right or wrong. Children gave their reasoning why and demonstrated their understanding of right and wrong. Children then explored humanism and how their beliefs link to The Golden Rule. Children used their own thoughts about deciding what is right or wrong along with The Golden Rule and humanist theories to help them create a poster demonstrating how to decide whether something is right or wrong.

IMPACT: Children have a deeper understanding of what is right or wrong and are able to use all information given to them to make a decision on the right or wrong thing to do in the situation. 

Lesson 5

INTENT: I can explain how religious teachings can help to affect someone's actions. 

IMPLEMENTATION: The children learnt about Desmond Tutu. A religious leader who protested to end South Africa's apartheid laws. The children used 3 different sources and their own research to create a poster about him and his work. 

IMPACT: Children were able to explain the work of Desmond Tutu and the impact his actions had. 

Lesson 1:

INTENT: I know what inspiring means.

IMPLEMENTATION: Childrent thought about what being inspiring meant to them and thought of people who inspire them. Children thought about whether being inspiring was a positive or negative thing to be. 

IMPACT: Children understand what it means to be inspiring and how it feels to be inspired by someone or something.

Lesson 3: 

INTENT: I understand why Jesus is a good teacher.

IMPLEMENTATION: Children thought about the different qualities a good teacher should have. Children compared these qualities to the qualities of Jesus and his teachings and explored the parables Jesus told. Children explored whether Jesus was a good teacher by understanding whether he showed the attributes they had listed.

IMPACT: Children understand why Christians believe Jesus was a good teacher and understand the qualities of a good teacher.

Lesson 1

INTENT: I can explore what is worth celebrating.

IMPLEMENTATION: Children thought about all the different things they celebrate both religious and non-religious. Children thought about the reasons for these celebrations and what happens on them and explored their meanings. Children then thought about what celebratory day they would create if school was to close for it. Children thought about things that were important to them and would be worth celebrating. They also considered whether there would be a particular food, gift or activty related to the day.

IMPACT: Chidlren have a better understanding of why things are celebrated and why they might hold importance to some people.

Lesson 3: 

INTENT: I can understand why Jewish people celebrate Pesach each year.

IMPLEMENTATION: Children heard the Passover story and thought about the different things Moses might have felt and could have done throughout the story. Children were also shown the Sedar plate and the different food on it. Children also learnt the different symbolisms of the food found on the Sedar plate and thought about a particular theme from the plate that they relate to. Children thought about what represents that theme for them and drew a picture of it.

IMPACT: Children understand why Jewish people celebrate Passover and understand what happened in the Passover story. Children can also relate the different themes found on the Sedar plate to something that is significant to them.

Lesson: 2

INTENT: I can identify the significance of Baptism for Christians.

IMPLEMENTATION: Children learnt what happens during a baptism and why Christians choose to have one. They understand how baptism can signify a Christian joining their community and making a promise to their faith/religion. Children then thought about the different promises they could make within their own community. 

IMPACT: Children can explain what happens during a baptism ceremony and its importance to Christians.

Lesson 4: 

INTENT: I can understand why people get married.

IMPLEMENTATION: Children listened to and read the vows made at a Christian wedding and thought about what love meant to Christians getting married. Children also learnt about the traditions followed at Jewish weddings and compared the similarities and differences between the two types of wedding ceremonies.

IMPACT: Children understand what happens at both Christian and Jewish weddings and can discuss the similarities and differences between the two.
