Lesson 1
INTENT: I can identify and start to sort solids and liquids.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were taught about the different properties of solids and liquids. Children thought about different things they use in their daily life and whether they were a solid of a liquid. Children sorted some items into solids and liquids using pictures and explained why they belonged in each group based on their properties.
IMPACT: Children now understand the properties of solids and liquids and how they can be told apart.
Lesson 2
INTENT: I understand temperature and how it might affect solids, liquids and gases.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children began by discussing what is meant by temperature and how it can be measured. Children learnt how temperature can change the state of materials and drew a diagram to show this.
IMPACT: Children know that the temperature can change the state of materials.
Lesson 3
INTENT: I can investigate the melting point of a solid.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children watched some videos that explained melting points and how the melting points of different chocolates might be different. Children planned and carried out an investigation where they melted white, dark and milk chocolate and timed how long it took each one to melt. All children recorded their findings and looked at their information alongside their predictions to see if they were right.
IMPACT: Children now understand that some solids turn into liquids when melted. Children can explain why some chocolates melt faster than others due to the amount of cocoa in them.
Lesson 1:
INTENT: To understand how to be safe around electricity.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were told all about the ways we use electricity. Children explored a virtual house and spotted the dangers in each room related to electricity. Children learnt how to keep wires safe and out of the way. Children discussed the different ways they could be safe around electricity and the importance of asking an adult to help them with plugging things in and changing light bulbs. Children continued their research and created posters aimed at younger children to help them to understand how to stay safe around electricity.
IMPACT: Children can now explain the dangers of electricity and how to keep themselves and others safe when around it.
Lesson 1
INTENT: To explore how sounds are made.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children explored different materials e.g. ruler, elastic bands to find out how sounds are created. Children explore what would happen with more/less force put onto the materials to make a sound.
IMPACT: Children were able to explain that sound is made from a vibration.
Lesson 3
INTENT: To investigate patterns between a sound sources and pitch.
IMPLEMENTATION: In groups, children had their own station of musical instruments. Children looked explored the instruments to discuss how the pitch works, the material and level of pitch and the part of the instrument that is making the vibration.
IMPACT: Children were able to understand the relationship between source and pitch.
Lesson 1
INTENT: I can sort organisms in the food chain.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children learnt about the food chain and what a producer, prey and predator is. They looked at what different animals could be classified as, within the food chain. They then were given different animals that they had to sort into categories of producer, prey and predator.
IMPACT: Children understand the concept of what the food chain is and the type of animals that are in each category.
Lesson 4
INTENT: I can identify teeth of herbivores and carnivores by their appearance.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children learnt the difference in teeth between herbivores having fatter teeth and carnivores having sharper teeth. Children used clay to create teeth of a herbivore and carnivore.
IMPACT: Children were able to idenitfy the difference between herbivore and carnivore teeth.
Lesson 1:
INTENT: I can recognise that living things can be grouped in lots of different ways.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children learnt that animals could be grouped in different categories. Children learnt the features of mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and birds. Children then sorted different animals into these categories and gave reasoning for why they had chosen a specific group for a specific animal.
IMPACT: Children understand the features of mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and birds and know what to look for when sorting animals into these categories.
Lesson 4:
INTENT: I can classify animals using
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were introduced to classification keys. Children were shown how classification keys work and how they are used to identify animals using yes/no questions. Children practised sorting sweets into a classification key and practised writing their own yes/no questions to help them identify the sweets. Children then extended this knowledge by creating a classification key for the living things they found in their previous science lesson.
IMPACT: Children understand how different animals can be identified using yes/no questions. Children understand how to use a classification key.
