In Science, we will explore the properties of matter, different environments and habitats for living things, and the Earth and its surface. Throughout the year, students will participate in exciting hands-on science experiments and engaging STEAM activities that encourage them to ask questions, solve problems, think like scientists, and discover how the world around them works!
The Terrapin Nesting Project
One of our favorite second-grade traditions is partnering with the Terrapin Nesting Project in Barnegat Light! Students learn about the mission of protecting diamondback terrapins and helping increase their survival through local conservation efforts. We celebrate by releasing the baby terrapins back into the marsh, giving them a healthy start in their natural habitat. It's a memorable, hands-on experience that inspires environmental stewardship and a love for our local ecosystem.
Monarch Butterflies
Each spring, our classroom observes the incredible life cycle of monarch butterflies! Students watch tiny caterpillars grow, form their chrysalises, and emerge as beautiful butterflies while learning about metamorphosis and the stages of the butterfly life cycle. Once they are ready, we release the butterflies into our school garden, giving students a hands-on experience that fosters curiosity, responsibility, and an appreciation for the natural world.
