OUR MAIN FOCUS TOPICS
Fundations - Our class practices fundations every morning. It consists of a warm-up regarding all of the sounds we have learned (this can be single letters, double letters, digraphs, glued sounds, dipthongs) and introducing new concepts. All of the sounds that we learn will help students understand word structure, which leads to reading and writing longer words! There will be decodable words (words you can sound out) and trick words (words you cannot sound out) during each unit. It is crucial to practice these words each night with your child by staying updated with my weekly classroom newsletter!
Reading - Our class will explore their literature curiosity by reading both fiction and non-fiction books whether it be individually, with a partner, in groups, or collaborating during Book Club with the 3rd grade class. We will focus on vocabulary development, reading comprehension, accuracy, and fluency. Your child will take a DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) about twice per year to keep track of data involving their reading level. It is important to read every night at home to ensure reading level progression!
Writing - Our class will advance their writing quite a bit during 2nd grade! We will write narrative pieces, research topics and writing pieces, write like scientists, opinion writing, and poetry! Students are encouraged to write every single day. The beauty about writing is that you can write about absolutely anything you want, and that is still practicing advancing your skills!
Math - Students will continue to practice their fact fluency as they learn new, more challenging concepts. Students will use their fact fluency to understand place value, solve 2-digit and 3-digit equations in both addition and subtraction, while also using their critical thinking skills to solve word problems. We will also learn about money, 2D and 3D shapes, telling time on an analog clock, measurement, introduction to fraction concepts, and collecting data to use graphs.
Social Studies - Our class will be learning about many different social studies topics this year! We will learn about citizens & government, heitage & culture, and community & geography. We will also discuss holidays throughout the school year and important current events. In 2nd grade, a big event we will have is our Culture Fair! Students will have the opportunity to explore other cultures while teaching others about their family history!
Science - In science, we will learn about matter, different environments for living things, and the Earth and its surface! In 2nd grade, our annual field trip will be exploring Insectropolis in Toms River! Students will be invited to face their fears and dive into learning about all of the insects across the globe!
