What do students learn in Fundations?
Our class practices Fundations every morning! It consists of a warm-up regarding all of the sounds we have learned (this can be single letters, double letters, digraphs, glued sounds, r-controlled vowels, dipthongs) and introducing new concepts. All of the sounds that we learn will help students understand word structure, which leads to reading and writing longer words! There will be decodable words (words you can sound out) and trick words (words you cannot sound out) during each unit. It is crucial to practice these words each night with your child!
What are syllable types and why do they matter?
Your child will learn different syllable types to help them decode and spell second grade words. There are six types of syllables: closed, open, VCe (silent e), vowel team, r-controlled, and consonant-le. Early in the year, the focus is on helping students tell the difference between open and closed syllables. As the year continues, students will learn how recognizing syllable types helps them read and spell longer, multisyllabic words.
