Summer Distance Learning

Buncombe County students can continue their learning opportunities during the summer through a variety of distance learning courses.  Courses from A-B Tech and NCVPS can help students earn advanced credit, explore interests, and provide flexibility in their schedule for the regular school year.  Students should work with their School Counselor to arrange to take these courses.

Summer 2024 Important Dates:

NCVPS Courses:  June 25 - August 2

A-B Tech Courses:  May 23 - August 5 and/or June 6 - August 2

Summer Academy:  June 24 - August 1

Complete information about the Summer Distance Learning processes can be found in the Summer NCVPS and A-B Tech INFO SHEET.  Please watch the Welcome Video, join the Google Classroom and sign the Summer Distance Learning Agreements prior to the beginning of the summer session.

To participate in a Summer Distance Learning Course, students and parents/guardians must read and sign the Summer Distance Learning Agreements (including the Virtual Check-In Agreement) before the end of the spring semester.  The signed agreements are to be stored at the school by the DLA or School Counselor.

Virtual Check-In

Students will be required to Virtually Check-In before the end of each week throughout the summer.  This will consist of submitting a screenshot via email of course progress and grades.  This process is outlined in the Google Classroom.

Before the end of the Spring semester students participating will attend an info session with a school staff member to go over the INFO SHEET and discuss the expectations for the summer.  Once the course begins, students will email a brief progress report, including a screen-capture of their current grades, to the Summer DLA.  Student email should be checked regularly throughout the summer.

Virtual Check-In students who fail to maintain a grade of at least a “C” may be required to report to the Summer Distance Learning Lab sessions for increased support.

*Students enrolled in face-to-face A-B Tech courses in the summer do not need to check in, only to attend the course.

A Summer Distance Learning Lab is available Monday-Thursday during  Summer Academy.  The Lab and the Summer DLA is available for students who need extra support or have questions.  Morning and afternoon sessions will be available upon request.  Students will also have access to the Summer Distance Learning Google Classroom resources.  The Google Classroom is monitored daily.  More information about availability can be found in the Summer Distance Learning INFO SHEET and the Google Classroom.

NCVPS courses can be arranged directly in cooperation with your school counselor.  Please keep in mind that these courses demand 3-5 hours of focused work per weekday during the summer term to be successful.  NCVPS summer session is usually 6 weeks long.  (PLEASE NOTE:  Final scores may not be back in time to make scheduling changes based on summer courses.)

Students login via the NCVPS Icon in NCEdCloud IAM.
