NCSSM
North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics
offers challenging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses to students across North Carolina. There are two types of online NCSSM courses.
Types of courses offered include: Standard, Honors, and AP Credit
Interactive Video Conference (IVC) courses allow schools to enroll one or more students in an NCSSM course. Students must be virtually "present" in the course during a specific time, during which they interact with the instructor and other students in the class via teleconferencing hardware. Students can only be registered for these courses by their high school. If approved, these courses will appear on a student's BCS schedule and transcript.
NCSSM also offers an online course of study that requires students to individually apply to be enlisted in NCSSM. These courses are asynchronous (the students do not have to be online at specific times). Students who pursue this option may work with their high school to include a period in their schedule to work on the online NCSSM course, but the course itself will not appear on the BCS schedule or transcript.
REMINDER: To participate in a Distance Learning course, students and parents/guardians must read and sign the Distance Learning Agreement.
NCSSM courses require that the school make special arrangements for software and textbooks. Interested students should work closely with their School Counselor to make sure that these arrangements are made as early as possible.
Steps to register:
Student registers for NCSSM course or placeholder during registration (or through school registration/schedule change procedures during other parts of the year)
Student works with the school to determine NCSSM participation options.
Student and Parents/Guardians complete the Distance Learning Agreement.
Signed Agreement forms and application are returned to School Counselor.
Approval or denial of course request by school
School Counselor coordinates registration with NCSSM.
Course scheduled in PowerSchool
Distance Learning Agreement stored by DLA or School Counselor.
