What are eLearning Days?

An eLearning day is a virtual, online day of learning for students in BCSC schools. BCSC uses eLearning days as a result of school cancellations as a means to make-up school days. BCSC may also utilize eLearning days for specific schools or district-wide for student health and safety concerns. On an eLearning day, regular, in-person classes will not be held, but classes will be held virtually using an electronic devices and our online learning management system, itslearning. For more information on eLearning days, view the sections below.

An eLearning day is a virtual, online day of learning for students in all of BCSC schools. eLearning days take place due to school cancellations or closures as a means to make-up school. BCSC may also utilize eLearning days for specific schools or district-wide for student health and safety concerns. On an eLearning day, regular, face to face classes will not be held. In the event of an eLearning day, students and teachers will interact virtually to learn new material, complete valuable assessments, and interact online. Teachers will have the flexibility to adjust lesson material to meet all BCSC student needs to ensure all students will have a meaningful learning experience.

All BCSC students grades K-12 will use an electronic devices and itslearning (corporation-wide learning management system) on an eLearning day. In a change from previous school years, kindergarten will now follow the same district expectations for eLearning day as other grade levels and participate in lessons online/take home devices. All BCSC teachers will post lesson materials on itslearning and will be available online from 9 am to 3 pm to provide assistance to students. BCSC's Technology Department and English Language Learning Office will also be available to help students and families.

Administrators, counselors, front office staff (administrative assistants), and deans will participate in eLearning days. Support staff, building services staff, and other hourly employees will participate in other work as specified by their supervisor on eLearning days. Please visit the other respective tabs for specific information.

  1. eLearning days eliminate added (makeup) days at the end of the school year. Through elearning days, seniors and families that have already made plans for summer will not lose learning opportunities.

  2. eLearning days allow BCSC students and staff to have continuous instruction throughout the winter to maintain momentum through snow days.

  3. An eLearning day prepares our students to learn from new and innovative technology.

  4. eLearning days provide our students with the opportunity to gain valuable skills to master required national Computer Science standards.

  5. eLearning allows our students to build real-world technical skills.

BCSC has implemented 1:1 devices in grades K-12 and 1:3 device ratio in kindergarten. Students in kindergarten have chromebooks and iPads, students in grades 1-8 have Chromebooks, and students in grades 9-12 have Chromebooks or laptops.

In addition to devices, BCSC has adopted itslearning as our school corporation-wide learning management system (LMS). itslearning allows teachers and students to interact online as well as access lesson materials in one central location. Our LMS, itslearning, allows teachers to post class information, share lesson resources, create video conferences and discussions to support student learning, assess students with a variety of tools, and provide options for communication between students and teachers.

On an eLearning day, teachers are required to have lesson materials posted on itslearning by 9 am. Teachers will have office hours from 9 am to 3 pm during which teachers will be available to answer student questions and provide guidance. Teachers are expected to respond to student questions or contact within thirty minutes of the initial contact. During an eLearning day, lesson materials must also adhere to the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) instructional framework as well as be congruous with the regularly scheduled curriculum leading up to an eLearning day.

BCSC will have an eLearning day on any cancelation up to 3 days. For closure information, visit the BCSC calendar.

Connectivity

BCSC understands limitations in WiFi/internet access exist.

Buildings will be available for BCSC teachers to access wifi for eLearning days. Staff must enter through Door 1. Some locations in buildings may be unavailable at times in buildings due to cleaning and sanitization processes; please contact your building supervisor for more information. If students or families request WiFi assistance, BCSC has some wireless internet hotspots available. Note: Not all wifi locations will be available due to social distancing recommendations from the Center for Disease Control. Please call the location before arriving.

If a student is unable to access internet or a device, please try to work with the student and family to make other arrangements for assignment completion.
