During this session we will explore the fundamental rights of students with disabilities, analyze our current practices in supporting students with disabilities and their families, and reflect on how we can utilize this learning to inform how we shift the mindsets and practices of the educators we support in order to ensure that all of our students have access to excellence in education.
Read Parent’s Notice of Procedural Safeguards and reflect using the following three guiding questions:
How closely aligned are your schools practices to the rights outlined in this packet?
In which area(s) is your school most aligned? Provide specific examples.
In which area(s) does your school have the most work to do?
Additional translations of Parent’s Notice of Procedural Safeguards available here.
2. Read Equity, Inclusion, and Opportunity, Addressing the Gaps (O’Hara, N., Munk, T., Reedy, K., and D’Agord, Cesar; May 2016).
Use your school’s achievement data to answer the following question: Where are the gaps in educational outcomes among particular groups of students? Be sure to include specific data points to illustrate these gaps.
3. Skim The IEP Process Guide and reflect on which aspects of the process your school is a model of and which area might require additional support and professional development.
4. Listen the podcast: Ableism & Racism: Roots of The Same Tree with Ibram X. Kendi and Rebecca Cokley (39 minutes)
