Reference: Characteristics of Metals and Non-Metals
Characteristics of Metals
- All are solids
- Tend to form positive ions.
- Are located left of the zig-zag line
- Conduct electricity well
- Are malleable (can be hammered/flattened)
- Have luster (are shiny)
- Are ductile (pulled into a wire)
- Can be alloyed (combined with other metals)
- Copper + Tin = Bronze
- Copper + Zinc = Brass
- Iron + Copper = Steel
Characteristics of Non-Metals
- Are usually gases
- All form negative ions
- Located right of the zig-zag line
- Poor conductors of electricity
- Aren't malleable (they crumble!)
- Aren't lustrous (not shiny!)
- Aren't ductile
Metalloids: Have some characteristics of metals and some characteristics of non-metals
- Semi-conductor: Good conductor when hot. Poor conductor when cold.
