This rule covers short pass and over a third.
When a player passes the ball, there must be enough space for an opponent to deflect or intercept it.
If two players from the same team catch the ball one after the other, the first player must keep possession. If the second player ends up with the ball, it is a short pass.
If two opponents catch the ball at almost the same time, the umpire calls “possession,” names the player who caught it first, and play continues, for example "Possession, Blue WD"
Sanction: Free pass to the opposing team where the second player gained possession
Terminology: Short pass
🎦 Watch this short video for an explanation of the short pass rule.
The ball must be caught or touched by a player in each third of the court.
The player who touches or catches the ball must be standing wholly within that third or land with the first foot or both feet wholly within that third.
