Beginner umpires are not expected to call advantage - with the exception of when a goal is scored.
If an infringement occurs but stopping play would disadvantage the non-offending team, the umpire can call “advantage” and allow play to continue.
For advantage to be applied, the team with the ball must be able to keep playing as they wish, without being put under unfair pressure because of the infringement - for example if they are able to freely move the ball towards their goal.
Advantage must not be applied if there is foul play, unsporting behaviour or dangerous play, or where an injury has occurred.
If the whistle is blown for an infringement, the sanction must be awarded.
To call advantage the umpire will:
Call “advantage” and state the infringement and playing position of the infringer. For example: "Advantage, Obstruction Wing Defence Blue"
Use the hand signal for advantage
If the whistle is blown for an infringement in the goal circle while the shooter is shooting and the shot goes in, the goal is awarded. When signalling the goal, the umpire will call “advantage” and state the infringement and playing position of the infringer.
For example: "Advantage Contact Goal Defence"
