To streamline our curriculum at home and to make it more impactful for gains towards the learning standards. We have begun a new reading program at home: Readwell and for some the Science of Reading. They went home today. Typically a package will last about two weeks.
Most of the students are using Readwell. The new reading program has a table of contents. You will choose the 3 day a week program (six days over two weeks) to guide what lessons to do at home. There are papers stapled together at the beginning of the folder. Students can use these, but do not write on the booklets/books or other pages that are attached to the folder. Everything else has to be returned for the next student to use. This program requires parent reading with the child. If it is underlined, your child reads that part and a parent reads the rest of the passage. Return the books when you have gone through all the lessons.
Some students have Science of Reading. Again, there are some papers that are in the back of the folders that show boxes with words on it, students can read the words and return the papers. Or if it is easier to cut them up into cards, they do not have to be returned. Everything else is to be used and then returned. Please do not write on everything else but those cards with words on them. You can use a dry erase marker on the laminated Map it page.

For CoreLink:
When I first arrived we finsished diagnositic testing with IXL and Iready. We were able to start in the last two weeks working with Read Naturally and finally settled on a routine we like, where half the class practices their reading while the other half plays reading games. Then they swap assignments. The reading games are based on Highline's Phonics Reading program and the focus in one CVC words (short vowel sounds) and Blends. Combining these two programs provides whole group explicit instruction of phonics rules while also providing individual practice and support.
For Reading Success:
For Reading Success, we are continuing to use Highline Phonics Program. We have already worked through CVC vowels and Blends. We will be long vowel sounds from the letter e at the end of words. We play usually three games each day to review the concepts and the students have been doing so well!

We managed to figure out Wednesday schedules and had nearly a full class! It was wonderful!
We began by working on Highline Intermediate Lessons, specifically short vowel sounds. We focused on compound words to add some challenge to the reading. We did a write the room where we put the words under the correct column for their vowel sound, played Compound Word bingo, and a game where you connect the dots to claim squares, each with a sentence to read. Everyone did really well and it was a great start to the school year!
