Having a mentor is a vital part of the induction experience in Bellefonte Area School District. Mentors provide not only practical guidance, but also emotional support, professional insight, and a consistent point of connection for new teachers during their first year.
Serving as a mentor is both a rewarding opportunity and an important responsibility. Mentors help inductees reflect on their practice, navigate district expectations, and build a strong foundation for success in the classroom. They are critical partners in fostering confidence, competence, and connection for our newest educators.
A detailed list of mentor responsibilities—including meeting expectations, support strategies, and documentation requirements—can be found in the Mentor Handbook embedded below. Responsibilities include:
Attend mentor training sessions as directed; meet with your mentee as directed.
Help inductee complete the Getting Ready for School Checklist.
Collaborate with the inductee to create their SPM or yearly goals. As needed, assist them with the completion of his/her portfolio.
Help your mentee develop an understanding of their curriculum, school culture, and building and district procedures.
Provide classroom-based support through Informal visits and/or observations by the inductee of the mentor (or other colleague) at least once a marking period. Meet for a post observation conference to reflect with the inductee.
Assist your mentee with their respective curriculum and programming. Help them develop their lesson plans and evaluate their data to inform their instruction. Assist with classroom management and behavioral routines. Encourage them to collaborate with our instruction/technology coaches.
Introduce them to other faculty members, coaches, and support staff.
Complete any required surveys.
Turn in your Mentor Documentation Form to your building principal by the last day of school.
Thank you for your commitment to mentoring. Your leadership and support play a powerful role in shaping the future of our district.
