Seniors who have met the requirements for a high school diploma or modified diploma, and who are passing all classes required for graduation by a date set by the Principal, will be permitted to take part in the district's graduation exercises with their cohort. This includes classes affected by the attendance requirement. Students, however, may receive their diplomas once they have completed all graduation requirements. Student fees and charges must be paid in full in order to participate in the graduation ceremony.
Seniors in violation of the Student Code of Conduct may not be allowed to participate in graduation exercises. Any student not eligible for graduation may not attend or participate in any senior activities earned from meeting graduation requirements. Foreign exchange students may also be allowed to participate in graduation exercises.
In accordance with School Board Policy IKC: In the interest of encouraging and recognizing outstanding academic achievement, a valedictorian and salutatorian will be selected for each graduating class. The valedictorian and salutatorian will be selected according to the following procedure:
• The valedictorian will be the student with the highest grade point average as computed at the end of seven semesters of high school work.
• The salutatorian will be the student with the second-highest grade point average as computed at the end of seven semesters of high school work.
• To be eligible for valedictorian or salutatorian honors, a student must be enrolled at Bandon High School prior to and continuously following the 10th school day of the student's senior year.
In order to graduate from high school in this district, a student must meet the following minimum requirements:
1. Credit requirements for program completion:
A. Each student needs at least 24 credits to graduate.
B. Each semester class = 1/2 credit and each year class = 1 credit.
C. One unit of credit = 130 hours of instruction in a planned offering.
D. BHS will not give credit for non-accredited programs or schools.
E. Credits shall be earned in the following required areas of study:
F. Career Related Learning Experiences - Students will participate in experiences that connect classroom learning with real life experiences in the workplace, community, and/or school, relevant to their education plan.
G. Essential Skills - Students must demonstrate proficiency in identified essential skills – Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Science, as mandated by the Oregon State Board of Education. Students may consult their Academic Advisor or the Principal for specific class offering information. The assessment of essential skills policy remains suspended by Senate Bill 744 for the 2023-2024 academic calendar and was extended through the 2027-2028 school year.
2. 25 hours of community service and/or participation in community service days will be accrued over the student’s four years of high school.
3. Attendance - Students are eligible for graduation when 12 school years of planned educational experience have been completed, however, a student may be allowed to graduate prior to 12 years of attendance when at least the other requirements have been met and the Principal and parent approval has been given. In modifying attendance requirements for graduation, the administration shall consider the age and maturity of students, access to alternative learning experiences, performance levels, parent/guardian wishes, and Board guidelines. If a senior does not attend regularly, a meeting will be held with the Principal to ensure attendance and graduation.
All funds remaining after graduation, unless otherwise designated by the class president, will be transferred to an ASB account for future graduating classes to use for graduation needs. The Principal will ensure placement of the remaining funds and will approve their use.
