This is the average of all final class grades received at the end of each high school semester. GPA calculation is based on the following table. Student GPA is calculated by tallying the final class grades with the appropriate credit points awarded, then dividing that total by the number of classes taken.
Grading Scale: Our grading scale will be updated as follows for REGULAR courses.
Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and Dual Enrollment courses will receive additional weighting when calculating GPA. The weighted scale will be as follows:
● A grade in an Honors or Dual Enrollment course will be worth 5.0 points.
● A grade in an Advanced Placement (AP) course will be worth 5.0 points.
● Grades in regular courses will follow the grading scale above.
This is the average of all final class grades received at the end of each high school semester. GPA calculation is based on a 4.0 scale (see table below). Student GPA is calculated by tallying the final class grades with the appropriate credit points awarded, then dividing that total by the number of classes taken.
Example: Student has 24.5 completed credits taken at the end of their 7th semester, resulting in 38 A’s, 10 B’s and 1 P.
38 (A’s) x 4 = 152 points
10 (B’s) x 3 = 30 points
Total points earned = 182/48 classes = 3.79 Cumulative GPA
A class change may be student-initiated prior to 4:00 PM on Friday, of the week the semester begins. There will be no class changes after this time, unless the change is teacher, administrator or parent/guardian initiated. All class changes must be initiated in writing and submitted to the office. Students must continue to attend classes for which they are scheduled until the requested change(s) have been approved - otherwise, the student may be considered truant. Any student dropped from a class for other than health or safety reasons approved by the Principal will receive a semester failing grade for the class.
Students who fail a class in the traditional classroom setting will be offered the opportunity to make up the class by participating in one of the following approved programs:
• Retake the class in the classroom (one additional opportunity)
• Online credit recovery curriculum (if you've taken the class in person and failed)
• Class offered through Southwestern Oregon Community College (at student’s expense, administration pre-approval required)
• Summer School program (if available)
Students attending BHS are not allowed to retake classes to improve their grades for GPA purposes. Any student may request to retake a class to demonstrate improvement in the curriculum; however, both grades will stand on their transcript, thus being calculated in their overall GPA.
A student is considered on-track for graduation if he/she earns an average of at least 25% of the number of credits required for high school graduation by the end of each school year. Credits earned may be counted as long as they are awarded before the beginning of the next school year (August 31), including summer school credits. By the end of each year a student should have earned:
Freshman - 6 credits
Sophomore - 12 credits
Junior - 18 credits
Senior - 24 credits *
*Additional graduation requirements other than minimum credits earned must be completed for students to be eligible for an Oregon Diploma, as outlined by the Oregon Department of Education graduation requirements.
Recommended classes by grade level:

Although students may meet the minimum graduation credit requirements in any given subject area prior to their senior year, it is the intent of administration to continue to encourage our students to engage in rigorous curriculum choices. Therefore, students will automatically be enrolled in math all four years of high school, even if they have already met the minimum educational standard. Bandon High School intends to encourage students to make class selections that will help them achieve success in their postsecondary academic experiences. Adjustments to any student’s academic plan may be discussed with the Academic Advisor and/or Principal.
Taking a Pass/Fail class does potentially affect your GPA. If you pass the class, you receive class credit and a designation on your transcript that you passed the class, but your GPA does not reflect the points you would have received if you took the class on an A-to-F grading basis. If you fail the class, you don't receive credit for the class. Your transcript states you failed the class, zero points are figured into your GPA. Taking a Pass/Fail class will decrease the number of points available to students for averaging purposes when calculating their GPA, thus making it possible for a student’s overall GPA to be lower due to limiting the number of classes. The following classes have a Pass/Fail grading scale: Student Aide, Work Experience, and other elective classes as deemed appropriate by administration.
(Elective credit, open to students in grades 11 and 12)
Workplace Experience is a one semester course providing students with work experience in fields relating to their career interest. Goals are typically set cooperatively by the student, workplace supervisor and BHS Academic Advisor and/or BHS Principal. These courses may include classroom activities involving further study in the field of discussion regarding experiences that students encounter in the assigned workplace. Workplace Experience program placement is subject to final approval from high school administration and may not exceed more than two class periods in a student’s daily schedule.
