Conclusion and Abstract

(2 Deadlines)

Results - typed draft. AND Conclusion - notebook draft

Due date for Homework #10: February 27, 2020 (Thursday)

Type your results section - use the following guidelines as you type your report:

Guidelines for Written Report:

Font: Times New Roman or similar

Size: 12 point

Color: Black

Margins: 1 inch

Voice: Use the third person and NO personal pronouns.

Conclusion: 1 page interpretation of your results. This is the most important part of the written report because it is where you analyze and explain your results. This is where you explain “why”. You explain the trends or patterns found in the data using information gotten while conducting background research as justification.

    1. The conclusion is at least two paragraphs:

Paragraph 1:

        • Reiterate the overall trend or pattern.
        • Why did that trend/pattern occur? What does your research indicate? What does the science say?
        • Did the data support or reject your hypothesis? How do you know? What data showed that it was supported or rejected? Make sure to use numbers and units in this part.
        • Why was the hypothesis supported or rejected? Use your background information (from the start of the project and even further research you’ve done) to attempt to explain your results.

Paragraph 2:

        • What were some possible sources of error while experimenting? Are there elements that could have been done better?
        • How would each of those errors affected your final results? Could they have increased or decreased the overall results?
        • What could you have done to prevent these errors or were they unavoidable?
        • What would be another experiment that you could conduct that would further explain the concepts you explored with this project?
        • How is this relevant to everyday life? Connect back to your introduction.

Conclusion AND Abstract - typed drafts

Due date for Homework #11: March 3, 2020 (Tuesday)

It is now time to type your conclusion section. You also need to type an abstract. While I recommend drafting your abstract in your notebook first, I will only review the typed version submitted for this assignment.

Conclusion: 1 page interpretation of your results. This is the most important part of the written report because it is where you analyze and explain your results. This is where you explain “why”. You explain the trends or patterns found in the data using information gotten while conducting background research as justification.

Abstract: This should be a brief paragraph (5-10 sentences) that briefly describes your project and results.

An abstract is a summary of your written report and is limited to a maximum of 250 words. The abstract will be included at the beginning of your written report and on the display board.

There are five parts of the abstract:

  1. Introduction: why is this work important? Motivate the reader to read your entire report.
  2. Problem Statement: identify the hypothesis you investigated.
  3. Procedures: how did you test your hypothesis?
  4. Results: Describe trend or pattern, using average data.
  5. Conclusion: Interpret results.
