About the Show

Soonie’s great-grandma was just seven years old when she was sold to a big plantation without her ma and pa, with only some fabric and needles to call her own. She began to stitch a Show Way, a quilt with secret meanings to show enslaved people the way to freedom. As each generation passes, the Show Way shines a light on the past and paves a road to the future, stitching together possibility and promise.

Kennedy Center Education Artist-in-Residence Jacqueline Woodson’s award-winning story of history, love, and resilience becomes a New York-premiere stage adaptation directed by Tavia Rivée Jefferson with new music by Tyrone L. Robinson. This moving, lyrical account pays tribute to women in Woodson’s own family whose strength and knowledge illuminate their daughters' lives over seven generations.

A Note from the Author

Hey All,

Welcome to a bit of history, a bit of dance, a bit of sadness, a bit of laughter, and a lot of music! This is what life is after all, isn’t it?

I was inspired to write Show Way, the book that this musical is based on, when my daughter, Toshi, was born. I had always wanted Toshi to know my grandmother and all the other great women that came before her. I had some of my history but went on a search for more of it. I am told that my great-grandmother, Soonie, held my big brother in her arms and would have loved the stories I used to tell as a child. I remember my Aunt Caroline (we called her Kay) fondly. I remember the South where I lived until I was seven, and the stories I wrote at that age. And I remember the birth of my own daughter, Toshi, and our decision to name her after my best friend, Toshi Reagon. So many moments lead to who we are now.

A repeating line in the book is There’s a road… We’re all on it. So were our parents. Our grandparents. Our ancestors.

Since the writing of this book (nearly 22 years ago!!) so much has changed. Six years after Toshi was born, we had a son and named him Jackson Leroi. Toshi grew up and in May will be graduating from college (Howard University – HU! You Know!). JL is in high school. My mother has moved on to the next place. I’ve written many, many more books.

I was a child who read slowly and loved to write. I never thought I was that smart. But in the years since I first had the dream to be a writer, I’ve written 40 books that are all over the world in many languages. In 2020, I was awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship.

There’s a road, girl, my mama said. There’s a road…

Keep writing. Keep reading. Keep singing. Keep dancing. So glad to be on this road with you.
